I’d slept well and was up early to find the sun already hot in a clear blue sky. It was going to be a good day, I was sure as I walked into town to do some shopping. Tom and Mary could go to hell and, with the new lock fitted, Alan wouldn’t be snooping around my house. At long last, I felt free. Although I was going to have to find a job and earn some money, I felt that I was moving in the right direction. I’d made some horrendous mistakes, wandered down a road to incredible decadence, but was now back on track.

‘Hello,’ someone called from behind me as I lugged my shopping up to my front door.

‘Oh, hi,’ I said, turning as the man who lived opposite walked up the drive.

‘Enjoying the sunshine?’

‘Not really,’ I replied, opening the front door. ‘It’s a lovely day, but I’ve had to do the shopping. How are you keeping?’

‘I’m fine, thanks. Actually, I’m glad I’ve bumped into you.’

‘Oh?’

He rubbed his chin and smiled at me. ‘To be honest, this isn’t a coincidence. I’ve been looking out for you.’

‘Well, here I am,’ I said, forcing a laugh.

‘I was wondering whether you’d like to come over to my place this morning?’

‘Er . . . Well, that’s very nice of you but . . .’

‘Only for an hour or so,’ he persisted. ‘And I’ll pay you, of course.’

‘Pay me?’ I breathed, wondering what on earth he was talking about.

‘As you know, I live alone. I find loneliness difficult to cope with at times and I’m not too good around the house. I saw you in your maid’s outfit the other day and thought it might be nice if you came over for an hour now and then to help me out.’

‘Oh, I see,’ I breathed, wondering how he’d seen me dressed in my uniform. He was a nosey old man, always looking out of his window or leaning on his front gate, and I reckoned that he must have seen me going to Tom and Mary’s. ‘To be honest, I’m not sure whether I can fit you in,’ I said.

‘That’s a shame,’ he sighed.

Wondering why he thought that I was a real maid, I hoped that he’d not heard anything about my other little business. What had given him the idea that I was a cleaning woman? I could have been going to a fancy dress party or . . . There was no way he’d know anything about Tom and Mary’s sex room, I was sure of that. Deciding to play this by ear, it occurred to me that Alan might have been talking to him.

‘I really need someone to come in and do a little cleaning,’ he persisted. ‘There are quite a few elderly people around here, so I suppose you get pretty busy. How long have you been in business?’

‘Er . . . Not long. I suppose I could come over for an hour,’ I finally agreed. ‘To be honest, I need the money.
