Iâd slept well and was up early to find the sun already hot in a clear blue sky. It was going to be a good day, I was sure as I walked into town to do some shopping. Tom and Mary could go to hell and, with the new lock fitted, Alan wouldnât be snooping around my house. At long last, I felt free. Although I was going to have to find a job and earn some money, I felt that I was moving in the right direction. Iâd made some horrendous mistakes, wandered down a road to incredible decadence, but was now back on track.
âHello,â someone called from behind me as I lugged my shopping up to my front door.
âOh, hi,â I said, turning as the man who lived opposite walked up the drive.
âEnjoying the sunshine?â
âNot really,â I replied, opening the front door. âItâs a lovely day, but Iâve had to do the shopping. How are you keeping?â
âIâm fine, thanks. Actually, Iâm glad Iâve bumped into you.â
âOh?â
He rubbed his chin and smiled at me. âTo be honest, this isnât a coincidence. Iâve been looking out for you.â
âWell, here I am,â I said, forcing a laugh.
âI was wondering whether youâd like to come over to my place this morning?â
âEr . . . Well, thatâs very nice of you but . . .â
âOnly for an hour or so,â he persisted. âAnd Iâll pay you, of course.â
âPay me?â I breathed, wondering what on earth he was talking about.
âAs you know, I live alone. I find loneliness difficult to cope with at times and Iâm not too good around the house. I saw you in your maidâs outfit the other day and thought it might be nice if you came over for an hour now and then to help me out.â
âOh, I see,â I breathed, wondering how heâd seen me dressed in my uniform. He was a nosey old man, always looking out of his window or leaning on his front gate, and I reckoned that he must have seen me going to Tom and Maryâs. âTo be honest, Iâm not sure whether I can fit you in,â I said.
âThatâs a shame,â he sighed.
Wondering why he thought that I was a real maid, I hoped that heâd not heard anything about my other little business. What had given him the idea that I was a cleaning woman? I could have been going to a fancy dress party or . . . There was no way heâd know anything about Tom and Maryâs sex room, I was sure of that. Deciding to play this by ear, it occurred to me that Alan might have been talking to him.
âI really need someone to come in and do a little cleaning,â he persisted. âThere are quite a few elderly people around here, so I suppose you get pretty busy. How long have you been in business?â
âEr . . . Not long. I suppose I could come over for an hour,â I finally agreed. âTo be honest, I need the money.
